Why Munnar is Perfect for Honeymoons
There's a particular kind of silence in Munnar that happens just before sunrise — the mist hasn't lifted yet, the tea pluckers haven't started their day, and the only sound is your partner breathing beside you under a thick cotton quilt. That is the feeling couples come to Munnar for. Not the viewpoints, not the waterfalls, not even the sprawling emerald estates — just that slow, early-morning quiet you forget exists until you leave a city for the hills.
Munnar sits at 1,600 metres in Kerala's Western Ghats, and it was purpose-built for romance long before Instagram invented the word. Colonial planters put up stone bungalows with fireplaces and wrap-around verandahs a hundred and fifty years ago, and the descendants of those properties are now some of the most beautiful honeymoon stays in South India. The air is clean and cool. The tea gardens roll on forever. You get candlelit plantation dinners, private spas that smell of lemongrass, and star-stacked skies you haven't seen since you were a kid.
The other thing we love about Munnar for honeymoons — and we say this gently — is the value. A four-night honeymoon at a lovely tea estate resort here costs roughly what two nights in a Goa beach hotel will set you back. You get serious romance without the Maldives-level budget, which means you can splurge on the parts that matter: a better room, a couple spa, a candle-lit dinner under a mango tree.
Best Time for a Munnar Honeymoon
Honeymooners have one thing working in their favour — you're not constrained by school holidays, so you can pick the exact month that makes Munnar shine. Here's how the year breaks down for couples.
September & October — fresh, lush, quiet
The monsoon has just pulled out, the hills are that impossible post-rain green, and the waterfalls are still running hard. Temperatures sit between 16°C and 24°C. Mid-week rates at resorts dip. This is our favourite window for couples who don't want crowds.
November to February — peak honeymoon season
The sweet spot. Cool mornings (10–14°C), clear skies, mist at sunrise, and every viewpoint fully open. December and January are the most romantic — expect to want a bonfire every night. Weekend rates at premium tea estates almost double, so book four to six weeks ahead.
March to May — warm but bright
Warmer (up to 28°C in the day) but still a world cooler than the plains. Good for couples who prefer bright, long days over misty mornings. Photographers especially love this light. 2030 onwards will see the next Neelakurinji bloom — a rare purple wildflower — so note it down now.
June to August — monsoon (romantic, but tricky)
If you both love rain and slow, indoor days with a book and chai, Munnar in monsoon is magical. If you want outdoor sightseeing, skip it. Landslides on the Kochi–Munnar road are real, and many viewpoints close.
Honeymoon Tip
Avoid long weekends and Christmas-New Year week unless you're happy to share every viewpoint. Mid-November, early December, and late January are weirdly quiet and still gorgeous.
The Perfect 4-Day Munnar Honeymoon Itinerary
Four days is the sweet spot. Enough time to unwind, cover all the big sights, and leave without feeling like you rushed anything. Here's the rhythm we plan for couples.
Day 1 — Arrival & a quiet tea plantation afternoon
- Morning: Fly into Cochin (COK). Pre-booked private transfer — give yourselves 4.5 hours for the drive, with a breakfast halt at Hotel Saravana Bhavan in Ernakulam and a leg-stretch at Cheeyappara Waterfalls.
- Afternoon: Check in at your tea estate resort. Don't book anything — just let the property spoil you. Lunch on the verandah, a long shared shower, a longer nap.
- Evening: Slow walk through the estate at golden hour. Couple's welcome drink, bonfire dinner, stargazing. Sleep early — tomorrow's a big one.
Day 2 — Mattupetty, Echo Point & Kundala Lake
- 6:30 a.m.: Hot chai on the balcony while the mist clears. This is the view you booked the trip for.
- 9:00 a.m.: Drive to Mattupetty Dam (13 km). A 20-minute speedboat ride on the reservoir is cheesy but charming — do it anyway.
- 11:00 a.m.: Echo Point. Yes, it's a tourist stop. Yes, you'll shout each other's names across the water. It's fun — don't overthink it.
- 12:30 p.m.: Kerala lunch at Sree Nivas or Rapsy Restaurant — try the appam with stew and Kerala parotta with beef fry.
- Afternoon: Kundala Lake. Rent a shikara-style boat for an hour. The cherry blossoms in January-February are ridiculous.
- Evening: Back at the resort — pre-book a couple's ayurvedic massage. Candlelit plantation dinner under the stars.
Day 3 — Eravikulam National Park & Top Station sunset
- 7:30 a.m.: Early breakfast — you want to be at Eravikulam National Park when the gates open at 8 a.m.
- 8:00 a.m.: Eravikulam. Short trail, easy walk, and you'll see Nilgiri Tahr (wild mountain goats) up close. The viewpoint looks onto Anamudi — South India's highest peak at 2,695 m.
- 11:00 a.m.: Tea Museum & tasting. Learn how the leaves in your morning cuppa actually get there — and pick up some hand-rolled tea for home.
- 1:00 p.m.: Lunch back at the resort. Pool time, hammock time, whatever you want.
- 3:30 p.m.: Drive to Top Station (32 km). The sunset from 1,880 m, looking over the Theni valley into Tamil Nadu, is the postcard-worthy moment of the trip. Carry a shawl or jacket — it gets cold fast.
- Evening: Drive back, bonfire dinner, hot chocolate.
Day 4 — Spice garden & slow departure
- Morning: Guided walk through a working spice plantation (we love the ones on Abhinav Estate). Cardamom, pepper, vanilla, clove — you'll never look at your kitchen shelf the same way again.
- Late morning: Quick stop at Attukal Waterfalls if you haven't had your waterfall fix yet.
- 12:30 p.m.: Final Kerala meal — order the karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish roasted in banana leaf) if it's on the menu.
- Afternoon: Drive back to Cochin. If your flight is late, stop at Fort Kochi for an hour — Chinese fishing nets, antique shops, and a cup of filter kaapi.
For a slower version of this plan, stretch it to five nights and add Thekkady (Periyar wildlife reserve) or a houseboat night in Alleppey. Both pair beautifully with Munnar. For a deeper look at day-by-day attractions, our ultimate Munnar travel guide has the long version.
Where to Stay — Romantic Property Recommendations
Munnar's stays are the honeymoon. Get this bit right and everything else falls into place. Broadly, you have three budget tiers.
Budget — ₹3,500 to ₹5,000 per night
Small homestays and boutique family-run guesthouses, usually 6–12 rooms. You trade a swimming pool for warmth, home-cooked food and a family who'll remember your names. Our picks:
- Misty Mountain Homestay — run by a Malayali couple in Pallivasal, 6 km from town. Amazing breakfasts, valley views.
- Dew Drops Munnar — on a working cardamom estate, clean rooms, warm hospitality.
- Green Valley Vista — lower price point, basic comforts, unbeatable balcony views.
Mid-range — ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 per night
This is the tier most Indian honeymooners pick, and rightly so — resort amenities, full restaurants, spas, and tea-garden views. Our favourites:
- Parakkat Nature Resort — family-run warmth, excellent food, infinity pool looking onto the hills. Often our first recommendation.
- Tea Country Resort (KTDC) — run by Kerala Tourism, spacious chalets, sunset views that honestly compete with much pricier properties.
- Blackberry Hills Resort — cottage-style rooms scattered across a hillside. Short walking trails around the property.
- The Panoramic Getaway — modern rooms with a glass-walled restaurant. Very popular with Gen Z honeymooners for the photos.
Luxury — ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per night
The full storybook honeymoon. Colonial bungalows, in-room fireplaces, private plantation guides, and service that remembers your anniversary. If it's a once-in-a-lifetime trip, go here:
- Windermere Estate — 65 acres, colonial architecture, arguably Munnar's most photographed property. Book a Plantation Villa.
- Spice Tree Munnar — contemporary luxury with infinity plunge pools in private villas. Outstanding spa.
- Wild Elephant Eco Resort — deeper in the forest, 20 km from town. Wake up to birdsong, genuine rainforest setting.
- Chandys Windy Woods — all-inclusive plantation luxury, great for couples who want zero decisions to make.
- Elysium Gardens Hill Resort — quieter, smaller, beautifully landscaped.
"The best honeymoon decision we ever helped a couple make was upgrading from a mid-range hotel in town to a tea estate villa 12 km out. They said it changed the entire trip."
What a Munnar Honeymoon Actually Costs
Real numbers, for a 4-night, 5-day honeymoon for two people, flying in from a metro like Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru. These are 2026 rates.
| Expense | Budget (₹) | Mid-range (₹) | Luxury (₹) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flights (return, 2 pax) | 8,000 – 12,000 | 14,000 – 18,000 | 20,000 – 28,000 |
| Stay (4 nights) | 14,000 – 20,000 | 24,000 – 40,000 | 60,000 – 1,00,000 |
| Private cab / transfers (5 days) | 6,000 – 8,000 | 8,000 – 11,000 | 12,000 – 16,000 |
| Meals & drinks | 4,000 – 6,000 | 7,000 – 10,000 | 12,000 – 18,000 |
| Activities & entries | 2,500 – 4,000 | 5,000 – 8,000 | 10,000 – 15,000 |
| Couple spa / experiences | 2,000 – 3,000 | 4,000 – 7,000 | 10,000 – 18,000 |
| Buffer (shopping, tips) | 2,500 | 4,000 | 8,000 |
| Total per couple | ₹39,000 – 55,500 | ₹66,000 – 98,000 | ₹1,32,000 – 2,03,000 |
Most honeymooners we plan for land somewhere in the ₹75,000 to ₹1,20,000 bracket — which gets you a good tea estate resort, a private cab, two stand-out experiences (couple spa + candle-lit dinner), and flights booked 6–8 weeks out. If you're doing this on a tighter budget, our Munnar vs Ooty vs Coorg comparison has a useful breakdown of how the three stack up on cost.
Money-saving insight
Weekday stays (Sunday–Thursday) are 20–35% cheaper than weekends at most Munnar resorts. If you can fly out Sunday and return Friday, you'll save enough to fund a full spa day.
Romantic Activities & Experiences
The viewpoints are lovely, but these are the experiences honeymooners actually talk about later.
- Private tea garden picnic. Most tea estate resorts will set up a picnic for you in the plantation — a hamper of Kerala snacks, tea, fresh fruit, a picnic mat in a cleared corner of the estate. Costs ₹2,500–₹5,000 per couple and is worth every rupee.
- Couple ayurvedic spa. Kerala is the home of ayurveda, and Munnar has some outstanding spas. Try the 90-minute Abhyangam (warm oil massage) for two. Most premium resorts do this in-house; budget ₹4,000–₹8,000 per couple.
- Candlelit plantation dinner. A private setup with a dedicated waiter, lanterns, a Kerala-meets-continental menu and usually a musician playing softly nearby. Book one for your last night.
- Bonfire & hot chocolate under the stars. Free at most resorts in winter months. Nothing beats sitting around a fire at 10°C with your partner and a cup of cocoa.
- Sunrise plantation walk. Ask your resort to arrange a local guide. You'll walk for an hour through the tea gardens while they explain plucking, pruning and processing. It's quiet, meditative, and beautiful.
- Stargazing at Kundala. Very low light pollution. On a clear winter night, you can see the Milky Way from the lake. Take a blanket.
- Cooking class. A couple of Munnar resorts now offer Kerala cooking classes — you'll learn to make appam, fish moilee or chicken stew with the chef. Surprisingly fun.
How to Reach Munnar for Your Honeymoon
Munnar has no airport or train station, so your journey starts at Cochin and ends with a beautiful four-hour drive up the ghats. A few things we've learned:
Fly to Cochin (COK)
This is the closest and best-connected airport — 110 km from Munnar, around 4 to 4.5 hours by road. Direct flights from every major Indian metro. Madurai and Coimbatore also work (140 km and 170 km respectively) but have fewer flights.
Pre-book your transfer
Don't wait until you land to negotiate with taxi drivers — airport cab prices at Cochin can be 30–40% higher than a pre-booked transfer. Use KeralaCabs, Savaari or have your resort arrange it. Budget ₹3,500–₹4,500 one-way for a sedan, ₹5,000–₹6,500 for an SUV.
Timing matters
The ghat road has 30+ hairpin bends. Avoid driving it after dark — fog, wildlife crossings and tired drivers make it a bad idea on your honeymoon. Aim to leave Cochin by 10 a.m. at the latest so you're at the resort before sunset. If your flight lands after 4 p.m., consider an overnight in Kochi and drive up the next morning.
Carry motion-sickness tablets
Not romantic, but crucial. Even seasoned road-trippers can feel queasy on the ghats. Avomine or Dramamine, 30 minutes before you start the climb from Adimali.
Common Munnar Honeymoon Planning Mistakes
We've helped couples plan enough Munnar trips to have seen the same mistakes repeat. Here's what to avoid.
- Over-packing the itinerary. The single biggest mistake. You came here to slow down, not to tick off every viewpoint. Pick 2 big things per day, max. Leave one afternoon completely unplanned.
- Booking during monsoon without knowing. June to August in Munnar is stunning if you love rain — and miserable if you don't. Check the month, not just the flight price.
- Skipping the plantation stay. Staying in Munnar town is fine for a quick trip, but for a honeymoon, the tea estate is the whole point. Even if it costs ₹3,000 more a night, the view is the experience.
- Not booking activities in advance. Couple spas, private dinners and guided plantation walks fill up fast — especially on weekends. Book when you book your room, not on arrival.
- Choosing the wrong airport side. If you're flying one-way in and one-way out, check both Cochin and Madurai pricing. Sometimes a Madurai exit saves hours and money.
- Under-layering. Honeymoon photos look best in soft knits and jackets, not sleeveless dresses you brought for the resort pool. Mornings can drop to 8°C in winter.
NamasteeWanderrlust Munnar Package vs DIY Planning
DIY is absolutely viable — and if you want full privacy, it's probably the move for a honeymoon. That said, here's an honest comparison of a curated package versus planning it yourself.
| NamasteeWanderrlust (Private Honeymoon Package) | DIY Planning | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing (per couple, 4N/5D, mid-range) | ₹72,000 – 95,000 all-inclusive | ₹66,000 – 98,000 (depending on how well you book) |

| Flexibility | Customisable itinerary built around your dates | Maximum flexibility, full control |
| Romantic add-ons | Pre-arranged spa, candlelit dinner, room decor on arrival | Need to coordinate with each vendor separately |
| Group vs private | Fully private — just the two of you | Fully private |
| On-trip support | WhatsApp concierge for the whole trip | You troubleshoot everything yourself |
| Best for | Couples who want the trip planned end-to-end and romantic extras handled | Experienced travellers who genuinely enjoy trip planning |

Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to the questions every honeymooning couple asks before booking Munnar.
How many days are enough for a Munnar honeymoon?
Three to four nights is ideal. A 4-day Munnar honeymoon gives you enough time to slow down at a tea estate stay, cover major attractions (Mattupetty Dam, Eravikulam, Top Station, Attukal Waterfalls), enjoy a couple spa or plantation walk, and still have a day to relax. Two-day trips feel rushed; five-plus works only if you add Thekkady or Alleppey.
What is the cost of a Munnar honeymoon package?
A mid-range Munnar honeymoon costs ₹45,000-75,000 per couple for 4 nights, covering stays (₹6,000-10,000/night), local transport, meals and activities. Luxury honeymoons at tea estate resorts push the budget to ₹1,00,000-1,50,000. Budget couples can do it under ₹35,000 if booking in advance and picking homestays.
Which is the best month for a Munnar honeymoon?
September to March is peak honeymoon season — cool, pleasant weather (15-25°C), clear skies, and all viewpoints open. October-February is the most popular window. Avoid June-August monsoon months unless you love misty rainy scenes. April-May is warm but good for the rare Neelakurinji flower bloom (next bloom cycle: 2030).
Is Munnar good for a 3-day honeymoon trip?
Yes, but you'll need to prioritise. A typical 3-day plan: Day 1 arrive and relax at tea estate; Day 2 full-day Munnar sightseeing (Mattupetty, Echo Point, Eravikulam); Day 3 Top Station viewpoint, shopping, departure. You'll miss some side trips like Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary but cover all core Munnar highlights.
What are the best honeymoon resorts in Munnar?
Top-rated choices: Windermere Estate (colonial charm, premium), Tea Country Resort (spacious rooms, sunset views), Parakkat Nature Hotels (family-run warmth), Spice Tree Munnar (contemporary luxury), Wild Elephant Eco Resort (forest stay). For all-inclusive plantation luxury, Chandys Windy Woods and Elysium Gardens are popular. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for weekends and peak season.
Is Munnar better than Ooty for honeymoon?
Munnar wins for couples who want quiet, tea estate stays with dramatic green landscapes and less commercialisation. Ooty is more touristy with shopping streets and amusement parks but better connectivity. For a romantic first-time honeymoon, most couples prefer Munnar's intimacy — but Ooty's toy train and colonial heritage have their own charm.
How do we plan a Munnar honeymoon on a budget?
Stay in family-run homestays (₹2,500-4,500/night) instead of resorts, travel in September or February (shoulder season pricing), book flights 6-8 weeks ahead, take KSRTC buses for long transfers, and eat at local restaurants over resort dining. Total budget honeymoon cost: ₹28,000-35,000 per couple for 4 nights.
Is Munnar safe for couples?
Yes, Munnar is one of the safest hill destinations in India for couples. The town is small, locals are welcoming, crime rates are very low, and most properties are family-run or boutique with good security. Stick to standard precautions — drive carefully on winding roads, avoid isolated viewpoints after dark, and book properties with verified reviews.
